Is your maintenance MOT due?
During our lifetime, the majority of us will experience an episode of musculoskeletal dysfunction or compromise. 80% to 90% of people experience some degree of back pain at one time or another, so don’t feel bad if you’re not one of the rare unicorns who never say “oof” as they get out of a chair. You are the norm.
Back pain is one of the leading causes of work absence in the UK, and musculoskeletal dysfunctions that cause this kind of issue can significantly affect your quality of life an ability to carry out day-to-day activities. Left untreated for too long, dysfunctions can result in people developing chronic or degenerative problems.
There is something you can do
Before you permanently take to your bed like a member of the family in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, declaring your case hopeless, know that there is something you can do! Even in cases where people are diagnosed with dysfunctions that might reoccur, there are things you can do to help prevent them being symptomatic and causing you pain and discomfort. Dysfunctions can stem from number of factors, like lifestyle (e.g. lack of exercise of repetitive overuse), degenerative changes, or long-term tissue trauma.
Whatever’s causing your “oof”s, our treatments are available to help you make your condition as pain-free and manageable as possible. Our initial appointment with you, where we discuss what’s bothering you and help devise a game plan to tackle it, is followed by treatments where we’ll also give you exercises and posture and lifestyle advice to empower you to kick your dysfunction in the posterior. Once your issue is in check and more manageable, we’ll offer to book you in for our all-important maintenance appointments.
A maintenance appointment is the human equivalent of booking your car in for a service and MOT; you wouldn’t wait until something goes seriously wrong with your car – you’d take it to the garage at the first sign of a problem (we assume).
By booking a maintenance appointment with us, we can detect, monitor and combat any potential problems as they show signs of appearing, before they become well established. Helpful as it would be if humans came with a flashing “check engine” light on their foreheads, maintenance appointments are the next best thing for catching any niggles that could prevent you from metaphorically blowing a gasket in future. Whatever “blowing a gasket” means. Convincing as this analogy is, we’re not literal mechanics. Shocking, we know.
Motoring metaphors aside, the point we’re making is that manual therapy for musculoskeletal dysfunction shouldn’t be seen as a luxury, but as a necessity to keep your body healthy. Whether you need a regular top-up of treatment every month, or every six months, don’t be afraid to re-visit your osteopath to help you keep your wheels a-turnin’!
Rosie and Ellie.
