What is acupuncture and why we use it
At Swansea Body Kinetics we are trained in Western Medical Acupuncture. This system of acupuncture has evolved from Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, but is quite different.
Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is an alternative system of medicine that is based on blocked energy (known as “qi” in Chinese Acupuncture), whereas medical acupuncture is used more as a tool in conjunction with other established health professions, in our case, osteopathy.
Western Medical Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system and increasing blood flow to the problematic tissue.
The practitioners at Swansea Body Kinetics mainly use acupuncture to help relief of muscular trigger points (tight bits of muscle tissue that can refer pain!). We find that medical acupuncture is a great adjunct to our osteopathic treatment, but can also be fantastic on its own, especially for patients in acute pain.
How Acupuncture can help
Most of the time we use acupuncture alongside osteopathy. This is because we find a mixture of treatment techniques to be most effective. Acupuncture helps by releasing trigger points in the tissues to release tension and improve blood supply. This means that the tissue receives all the nutrients it needs to repair and function properly, and tissues that function properly feel much better!
After an initial consultation to determine the root cause of your problem, we use a variety of techniques that aim to resolve the initial cause and to tackle any other factors that may be causing your symptoms.
What is involved
Acupuncture involves the insertion of a very fine sterile needle into the muscle tissue. The needle is then left in for up to 20 minutes. Sometimes we move the needles a little bit to further encourage the effect of the needle. The needles used are super fine and often cannot usually be felt – but, just occasionally you can feel them if the needle hits a tight spot!
Every appointment is 35 minutes long. For your initial appointment, you will be sent a pre-treatment questionnaire which gathers important details about your medical history and the problem you are coming in with. This saves a lot of time and means we can save you time and money in an appointment with us.
The average number of treatments with an osteopath is between 3-5 appointments. However, your treatment really depends on your condition. Some people may only need 2 sessions whilst for others, it will be a lot more. We will always discuss this with you in detail.

Great treatment, works wonders for any niggles or problems I have. My shoulders needed a fair bit of work due to general tightness and years of neglect. within two treatments the difference has been significant when testing and retesting but the difference how I felt lifting was huge. Very precise and knowledgeable in treating to the root of the issue and correcting it, very professional and super friendly. Going to be getting treatments on a monthly basis to keep me moving well.
